Bad Behavior! Stop Your Dog from Jumping on People
If your have a dog with the issue of jumping on a guest as they enter your house, or if your dog is generally excited by people and jumps on them a lot, this is a problem that you, the owner and trainer, can easily fix. A problem can get much worse if the pet learns the wrong things from the owner.
Your best friend, the canine, has learned over the generations, that jumping on people is one of the best ways to get immediate attention. Most owners have classically tried to correct the problem by yelling. Owners don’t understand why yelling doesn’t stop the behavior. The explanation is simple: Dogs don’t speak English. Also, when the owner gets mad at the dog, his human behavior is seen by the pet as just more attention.
By not giving attention while the dog is excited, he learns that jumping will not be rewarded. The next time you arrive home to an excited dog, try remaining still, and turning your back to the pup until he is in a relaxed state of mind. Only then should you speak to the dog and give him praise. Repeat the exercise several times until the dog remains calm and seated when you arrive home, then give him affection (in a calm and controlled manner, so as not to re-build excitement.)
One alternate method: Hold the dog’s front legs when he begins jumping on you. Hold the legs until he feels uncomfortable, gripping them firmly, while not hurting him. Start to walk toward your dog, compelling it to walk backwards. Release the legs and say, “down!” The secret is not to say anything and not to look at the dog until the moment you set him free.
Theses are two very good ways to begin controlling a very common problem with household canines. But remember: One method should be adopted, used and then used consistently over time. Switching methods will confuse your pet and you will not get the best results for your efforts. Try to determine which method is best for both of you, and stick to it!
Good Luck!
