Understanding Your Dog’s Behavior: Separation Anxiety
The Situation: The dog is a perfect angel when people are home. When left alone, the dog scatters the trash, chews the pillows on the couch and generally ravages the place. When humans return, the dog grovels ate the door, sheepishly wagging his tail, sometimes going belly up.
The Humans Viewpoint: He never does this stuff when we’re around. He waits until we go out and then he does it for spite because we left him home. Look how guilty he looks when we come back. He knows what he did. He should be punished. He’s a bad spiteful dog.
The Canine Viewpoint: When humans leave, I get really nervous and there’s nothing to do in the house. Chewing makes me feel better, and I like being close to their smell on the couch. Sometimes there ate things in the containers that smell even more like them, so I take those out. I’m so happy to see my humans when they come back, but lately they’ve always in a growly mood, so I do my best to tell them how much I like them and submit to them. They must go somewhere really bad to be in such a bad temper. But I’ll keep trying.
