Recipes For Dog Treats – Bacon & Liver Treats
3 1/2 pounds (12 to 14 cookies per pound)
3 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
1/2 cup chilled bacon drippings
2 tablespoons desiccated liver
3 cups quick rolled oats
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups beef or chicken broth or drippings, or sufficient for processing
1. Position the rack in the center of the oven and preheat at 400 F. Lightly grease or use parchment paper to line two cookie sheets or baking trays.
2. In a large bowl, using a fork or wire whisk, blend the flour and dry milk.
3. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the bacon drippings until the mixture resembles fine meal. Using a fork, stir in the liver and oats.
4. In a medium bowl, using a wire whisk or electric mixer on medium speed, beat the eggs until foamy before beating in the broth.
5. Using a large spoon, a spatula, or your hand, blend until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl and a soft, somewhat sticky dough forms.
6. Using a teaspoon, drop heaping spoonfuls of the mixture 1/2 inch apart onto the prepared baking trays. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cookies appear very dry and the edges are light golden brown. Remove the trays from the oven an cool to room temperature. Turn off the oven.
7. When the cookies have cooled completely, put all of them on a single baking tray and return them to the cooling oven. Leave them undisturbed, without opening the oven door, for 8 to 16 hours.
