Recipes For Dog Treats – Carrot Cookies

  • Sharebar

3 to 4 pounds cookies

4 cups whole-wheat flour
1/4 cup soy flour
1 cup wheat bran
1/2 nonfat dry milk
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup warmed honey
1 1/4 cups finely shredded carrots
1/4 cup fresh beef or chicken broth, or sufficient for processing

1. In a large bowl, using a wire whisk, blend the two flours, wheat bran, and dry milk. Then, using two knives or a pastry blender, cut in the shortening until fine crumbs form.

2. In a medium bowl, using a large spoon, combine the honey, carrots, and broth.

3. Using a large spoon, a spatula, or your hand, combine the two mixes, blending until the dry ingredients are just moistened and a stiff dough is formed. Place the dough in a plastic bag, seal it tight, and leave it in the refrigerator for about 8 hours.

4. When you’re ready to make the cookies, position the rack in the center of the oven and preheat at 375 F. Have two ungreased baking trays ready.

5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured flat surface, and using a rolling pin, roll it out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Using cookies cutters, cut as many cookies as you can, reworking the scraps as you go. The dough will become very stiff as it is reworked.

6. Place the cookies side by side on the baking trays and bake for about 18 to 2o minutes or until the cookies appear very dry and the edges are lightly golden brown. Remove the trays from the oven and cool to room temperature. Turn off the oven.

7. When the cookies have cooled completely, put all of them on a single baking tray and return them to the cooling oven. Leave them undisturbed, without opening the oven door, for 8 to 16 hours.
