Dog Breed

Bringing a new dog home is a life-changing decision. Before you begin the search for a new dog, you need to ask yourself this question: Is this the right time to bring a dog into my life?

A dog is a great companion, but it also requires a daily, long-term commitment in the form of regular mealtimes, playtime, exercise, veterinary care, grooming and training.

Will your busy schedule allow you to give a dog the care and companionship he needs? Think about it!

It is a 10 to 15 year commitment. If you have children, make sure you choose a dog who is kid friendly. If you have other dogs and cats make sure you get a dog who gets along with them.

Which Breed to Choose?

Some aspects to consider when looking for a breed:

—> Size: Large or Small?

You don’t have to own a large house to own a large dog, but a tiny apartment isn’t big enough for giant breeds like Great Danes for example.

Make sure  you can take him outside for a good walk every day, otherwise they will go crazy.

Great small breeds for apartments and small houses are: Bichon Frise, Chihuahuas and Pomeranians, but remember, even small breeds need daily exercise.

—> Noise

Small dogs fit well into any type of housing, but sometimes other traits can make them unsuitable for life in apartments or condos. This is the case of the Shetland Sheepdogs.

They might seem just right for apartment life because of their smaller size, but they love to bark. The same is true for Beagles.

—> Activity Level:

Time to check the amount of exercise your new chosen breed needs. Working breeds like Border Collies needs a serious workout everyday.  So if you are a busy person, that might not be the right dog for you.

On the other hand, French Bulldogs and Pugs don’t require a vast amount of exercise, but don’t forget, they still need a daily walk.

—> Coat

Grooming needs are an important considerations when choosing a dog. Think about how much time and money you will need to devote to grooming.

Some breeds like Shih Tzu, Chow Chow and Lhasa Apso require constant grooming. On the other hand Italian Greyhounds, Dalmatians and Miniature Pinschers require very little grooming.

—> Health Problems

Some breeds suffer from congenital problems. For example, one of the most common genetic health problems is hip dysplasia. It is common in breeds like Labradors and German Shephards. So be prepared for a possible medical intervention.

It is important to know that every dog, despite the breed, is an individual with his own unique personality and temperament. Also you should consider adopting from a shelter or rescue groups. There are many dogs waiting for a good home.
