How to Estimate Your Dog’s Age

1-800-PetMeds Fetch/125x125.gif1. The first year of a dog’s life = 15 years

2. The second year of a dog’s life = 10 years

3. Every year thereafter is equal to 3 “human years.” For example, a formula for ten-year-old dog would be 15 + 10 + (3×8) = 49. For a fifteen-year-old dog it would be 15 + 10 + (3×3) = 64.

Sorry, but I don’t like this. I am used to the 1 dog year = 7 years for people. My dog just passed away after having a stroke. She was 13 and 1/2, and I like to think that she had a long life by living to 94 or so years of age in human terms. Is it wrong to think that?

Hi there! Sorry for the delay!
Well, I found this results in a great book! In the book they are talking about your method, but they say that this one that I posted is more accurate. But it’s your choice to decide which one will make you feel better. ;) I’m really sorry for your loss.

    Thanks for visiting my website!
    Have a wonderful day!

  3. The problem with any system like this is that they don´t take account of the type of dog.

For example, I have Rottweilers which sadly don´t live so long. A thirteen year old Rottie is a venerable old man (or girl!) but a thirteen year old terrier may be middle aged in comparision, don´t you think? Nice to meet you Patty!
