The Right Way to Housebreak Your Puppy
Housebreaking is a really simple process but it takes a lot of patience.
Typically, there are three elements to successful housebreaking. First of all, keep in mind that you always are going to set up your dog to succeed, and one way to do that is by never letting him out of your sight, unless he is isolated in a crate or in a small enclosed area.
Your puppy also needs to be in a very strict schedule. Puppies about 10 to 12 weeks need to go out every half hour to hour.
The way to set your puppy up to succeed is making sure he is “empty” and them take him inside the house to have a little freedom.
They also need to go to the bathroom shortly after eating or drinking, or after its regular play. So, when you take your dog outside and it starts to go, use a command like “Go pee” or “Go potty”. Do not do that when he is sniffing around in the grass, just when he starts to go. After he’s finished, give him a little treat to reward him for going in the right place.
If an “accident” happens, use an enzimatic odor remover to complete get rid of the scent, otherwise the house is going to smell like a dog’s bathroom. A dog’s nose is more sensitive than ours, and if he smells the pee around the house he will probably pee in the same place again.
